Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, as a young girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. After only two school years she left for an acting profession. Her path was not without obstacles. In New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. While in New York, she was employed in a bar as a check-in girl before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. There, she made enough money as an usherette throughout the day, and working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
